Mathias Heinicke, born in 1871, studied at Markneukirchen and in Italy, and worked in Budapest and Berlin. In 1897, he established a shop at Wildstein. He handpicked woods aged in Bohemian churches and farmhouses for quality sourcing. He advertised his instruments as: “not built with any of the swindling and fanatical procedures often named ‘secret’.” (Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers by William Henley)
