Description: 

Violin labeled "Italian-Tone, G. Otto Orth, Seattle, WA, March 1928". 

George O. Orth (1885-1962) studied under Max Willibald Schmidt and Paul Kissner in Seattle. He owned a shop with two employees from 1935 to 1955. Orth made about 125 violins, 12 violas, 2 cellos in his life, including several Strad models, the “Ernst”, and copies of a Testore. He used turpentine sealer followed by three coats of dark red-brown spirit varnish, then an oil varnish. (The Violin Makers of the United States by Thomas James Wenberg)
